Before you start

What you'll need

📐

Tape measure

25 ft minimum, ideally with a wide blade so it stays rigid.

✏️

Pencil & the printable guide

The PDF has a grid where every square = 12 inches.

📱

Smartphone for photos

Snap each wall and any utilities — we'll cross-reference them.

The Six Steps

How to measure your kitchen in 30 minutes

Follow these six steps using the printable PDF. Measure in inches — corner to corner — and double-check by adding the parts so they match the whole wall.

1

Draw your walls

Sketch the kitchen on the grid in your current layout. Mark every door, hallway, window, and obstruction (radiators, columns, soffits).

2

Mark utilities & door swings

Note plumbing, gas, and electrical lines. If you plan to move any, show where. Indicate which way each door swings.

3

Measure wall lengths

Corner to corner for each full wall — always in inches — and write the number directly on your drawing.

4

Measure openings

Measure each window and door opening edge to edge (including casing/trim). Note ceiling-to-window-top and floor-to-window-bottom.

5

Locate items on walls

Measure from each corner to every fixture, window, outlet, and pipe. These should add up to the full wall length — a quick accuracy check.

6

Measure ceiling height

Floor to ceiling at the corner where walls and ceiling meet. Note any soffit drops or beams — they affect upper-cabinet height.

Pro Tips

Do these · avoid these

Always measure in inches, not feet

Cabinet sizes (12", 18", 24", 30", 36") are sold in inches. Writing "8 ft 4 in" is a recipe for math errors during ordering.

Double-check with a math test

Add corner-to-fixture-to-fixture-to-corner. The sum should equal the wall total. If it doesn't, you missed something.

!

Don't measure cabinet-to-cabinet

Measure wall to wall, then locate items on the wall. Measuring between existing cabinets misses gaps and out-of-square walls.

!

Don't forget the ceiling height in two spots

Older San Antonio homes often have floors and ceilings that aren't level. Measure ceiling height at both ends of the room.

Measuring FAQ

Common questions before you start

How accurate do my measurements need to be?

Within ¼ inch. Cabinets are built in fixed widths (3", 6", 9", 12", 15", 18", 21", 24", 27", 30", 33", 36", 42"), so even small errors can mean a filler strip you weren't expecting. If you're not sure, schedule a free in-home measurement — we'll re-measure on site before anything ships.

Do I need to remove the existing cabinets first?

No — measure the room as it exists today, ignoring the current cabinets. Measure wall to wall, ceiling to floor, and note where doors and windows are. We design around the room itself, not the old layout.

What if my walls aren't square or my ceiling isn't level?

Common in older San Antonio homes — note it on your sketch. Take ceiling height at multiple points (both ends of each wall) and we'll account for it with scribe moldings and filler strips during installation.

Can I just send you photos instead of measurements?

Photos alone don't give us enough to quote. But photos + the measuring worksheet are perfect — we use the photos to verify the worksheet during design. Both together get you a quote in 48 hours.

Should I include plumbing and electrical on the sketch?

Yes. Mark sinks, dishwashers, ranges, refrigerators, outlets, vents, and any gas lines. If you plan to move any of these, indicate where — we coordinate with your plumber/electrician on the design.

What if I make a mistake — do I have to start over?

Just download the PDF again and print a fresh page. Or scribble it out — we can usually read through corrections. When in doubt, call us at (726) 300-8438.
